NOvate of New Orleans Develops Life-Saving, Umbilical-Cutting Device

NOvate Medical Technologies, LLC (NOvate) is a New Orleans-based medical device development company focused on commercializing high-quality, low-cost medical products while addressing critical global health needs. NOvate’s first product, patented InfaClip, previously known as SafeSnip, is aimed at reducing maternal and neonatal mortality as well as efficiency for live births in both the United States and developing countries. InfaClip is a patented, disposable plastic obstetric device that simultaneously cuts, clamps and shields the infant, mother and birthing attendant from infection.

InfaClip was invented and developed by William Kethman, MD and a group of engineers in partnership with Tulane University Medical School and School of Engineering. Initial funding was awarded by the MTVu Movers & Changers program in partnership with Blake Mycoskie (Founder and Chief Shoe Giver of TOMS Shoes), Stephen Hanson (Founder and President of B.R. Guest Restaurants), Barry Sternlicht (Chairman and CEO of Starwood Capital Group) and Snoop Dogg (Rapper and Entrepreneur). In 2010, Novate also received funding after placing in the New Venture Championship business plan competition held by the University of Oregon. Further development of the device was supported by the Wal-Mart Foundation through the Clinton Global Initiative University and the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA). Most recently, InfaClip was awarded a grant from the Saving Lives at Birth program in combination with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to assist with the first wave of production and product testing.

InfaClip makes the birthing process more efficient by utilizing plastic cutting blades that rely on the sheer force of the opposing faces of each blade to clamp, cut and shield the cord in one motion. The device separates after clamping and cutting the umbilical cord tissue, safely severing the connection between mother and child while ensuring that the device is not reused. One side of the device remains on the placental umbilical tissue while the other side remains on the infant umbilical tissue, reducing exposure to potential infection until the cord naturally falls off after 10-14 days. InfaClip utilizes an enclosure system to protect the umbilical cord and a double-locking mechanism to prevent reuse and misuse of the device, a practice that leads to increased infection and disease transmission. The symmetric design and multiple safety features of the device shorten the delivery process by transforming the umbilical cord severance process into an intuitive, one-step procedure that can be used with minimal training. Ease of use allows InfaClip to be successfully used by birthing attendants of many different cultural practices and dialects or languages.

InfaClip will be ready for international shipments within the next six months.
